Sustainability
is not just another aspect
... but the fundamental motivation behind everything we do. We run our business solely because it promotes a sustainable way of life.
ObjectivesHow we understand sustainability*
We are aware that true sustainability is not possible in a growth-based system on a planet with finite resources. Therefore, when referring to what we can practically achieve today, we speak of sustainability* and by that we mean “as sustainable as possible”. For us, sustainability* is above all complete transparency regarding our own shortcomings - in conjunction with these four aspects:
Climate Reality
We acknowledge the objectively catastrophic trajectory of the Earth's climate regarding human life and millions of other sepcies. We do not sugarcoat the situation and clearly state the immense systemic transformation that lies ahead. We fully support the positions and demands of the scientists of Scientist Rebellion.
Human-Centric Approach
When it comes to technical and organizational systems, users are at the forefront of everything we do. We design systems in collaboration with the people who use them every day - always with a focus on usability, culture, and data protection.
Holistic Approach
We align every internal and consulting decision with the concept of the (foot and) handprint: A holistic approach that not only requires the elimination of negative consequences but also actively promotes positive transformation and takes ecological, economic, and social impacts into account. So we always ask: Are we improving quality of life, social solidarity, and the quality of ecosystems?
Quality
We rely on open source to keep pace with the rapid evolution of opportunities and security requirements in the digital society. We have high standards for the reliability and longevity of our solutions and therefore actively participate in the global developer community to further develop the software components we use. This results in additional benefits such as reusability, interoperability, and objectively verifiable security.
StepsHow we live sustainability*
Despite being part of the current unsustainable economic system, we try to get some things right:
🏭
Hosting
101cloud and all other tools we operate run on 100% renewable electricity - at the Hetzner data center even without active air conditioning and with waste heat recovery. Our backup server runs on reused hardware. Find out more at Hetzner and mailbox.org.
🏢
Spaces & Events
We currently do not have our own office space, but instead use co-working spaces. When choosing a space, we prioritize the use of green energy, bike-friendliness, well-insulated buildings, and vegan options. All our events offer vegan-only catering.
🚅
Travel & Transportation
We prioritize business travel by train, bus, or bicycle. Car travel is limited to exceptional cases, and we have so far been able to avoid air travel entirely. We strive to minimize travel by working remotely and sourcing regionally. We clearly prefer climate-friendly shipping via bicycle couriers or electric vehicles.
💸
Purchasing & Cash Flows
We source vegan and, whenever possible, reusable products. We don’t want our money to benefit the wrong people. So we carefully consider whether a business relationship conflicts our sustainability* goals or our mission. In doing so, we align with the positive/negative list of our friends at Village.one ↗
🚀
Use of Technology
Technology is political and an instrument of power. We critically evaluate the use of technologies and their gatekeepers against our ethical values and our mission, and we consciously question hype. If technology is tied to social or environmental exploitation, surveillance, or accumulation of power, we do not use it - or only to the extent that the purpose truly justifies (Example: We evaluate the use of AI against the Code of Conduct for Democratic AI ↗). As a general rule: Any efficiency gain that undermines our mission cannot be considered a gain.
ConnectGrowing together
Got any ideas on how we can join forces to promote sustainable* solutions or support each other in the fight for a world worth living in?
